A Super Simple Way to Tell if You Have a Leak in Your Home

We know – noticing your water bills continuously increase despite your usage staying the same can be frustrating. However, the truth is that your water bills aren’t getting higher for no reason – most likely, it’s because you have a leak.

But how can you tell for sure?

It’s super simple – just follow these steps:

  1. Head on over to your water meter and take a reading. Make sure that you write it down exactly how it reads (you may even want to take a picture to help you remember), and make sure that no one is using the water at the exact time that you’re taking the reading either.
  2. Wait for about an hour or two, and during this time, ask everyone in your home to avoid using water – this means no showers, no flushing the toilet, and no turning on the sink. Tip: if you have a lot of people in your home and coordinating this is difficult, perhaps try this early in the morning when people are still sleeping to confirm no one will be using water.
  3. After some time has passed, go back to your water meter and take another reading. Write this reading down too so that you can compare to your original reading.
  4. Compare readings! If the reading has changed, this is a good indication that you have a leak. Why? Because the reading shouldn’t change if no one in your home was using any water! If the reading has changed, it clearly means that water is escaping somewhere.
